Early 1976 125 B (125 C class today) My first real MX bike, a 1975 RM 125 with a factory hop up kit. This was my first real holeshot also, at Millville and luckily I was wearing a Bob's Cycle Supply jersey and John Raniko shot this picture. This picture was on the wall at Bob's for a long time with many other racers. I had a 1976 RM 125 soon after this, have not found any pictures of that bike yet.
These are practice pictures. I was riding 125 A (125 B class today) in "77" and "78" My 1977 RM 125 My 1976 RM 250
Climbing the first uphill section at Millville on my 1978 RM 125 I broke my leg in two places later that season, July 18th to be exact, at a track in Buffalo.
I advanced to 250's this year and rode 250 Intermediate (250 B class today) I rode a very fast 1979 KX 250, besides my 82 KX this was one of my all time favorite bikes. A fork kit and a pair of Fox Air Shox made this bike fun to ride. Millville, just past the finish line entering the first turn area. Cambridge, uphill after the first turn.. Bemidji, coming back from tech inspection. Yes, everyone's bike was inspected back then. Entering the first turn at Bemidji after about the third bungee cord restart, no kidding! I think the guy on the Honda jumped it but they let us go this time. This was a really wild class at this time since we were all hungry to get our points so we could advance to Expert class. Here is one of my Millville starts. The gate was in the same exact spot it is now, it fell forward and was a full length cable type, very easy to jump start from what I remember the start was so wide bungee cords didn't work anymore. From what I remember this was the first start gate in the state. The bus behind the gate was used for sign-up. There was no other buildings on the property. Nobody had pressure washers back then and washing your bike in the creek was common. Millville first turn. Unknown Yamaha 125 rider. Here is a borrowed bike I rode in Florida the winter of "79"
Graduated to 250 Expert Class late in "79" Cambridge, on my 1980 KX 250, first year for the Uni-Trac, it was absolute JUNK!! Millville, just past finish line on first turn. Grand Rapids. Cambridge.
My 1981 KX wasn't much better but some Krause Racing flow porting and Fox Air Forx helped. Marie with our first born son Jon in the Elko pits. Buffalo, where I broke my leg a couple years before. Notice the plastic Scott MX boots. Practice track. 250 expert up in Grand Rapids
My 1982 KX 250 which was much improved over 81. 82 was the first year for a front disc brake and last year for an air cooled motor.
